The birth of the bills SOPA and PIPA had spurred millions of negative responses across the internet even from many user-based content sites. The bill is targeted to eliminate foreign piracy websites by allowing the government to filter DNS, setting up something a firewall to blockade any foreign websites related to piracy. Also the bills also gave government permission to terminate local sites that have any links to these websites.
Many contents online are user-based content sites such as major websites Facebook, Youtube, Reddit, Wikipedia and many more. These websites allow users to add to its content thus it is difficult for them to regulate the content users adds to it. If any users link a pirated website intentionally or by accident, it can lead to the ultimate termination of the website. Not only this cannot efficiently fight piracy on local uploaded content it will create havoc and confusion which might result in end of the ability for internet users to share information and knowledge freely.
On an Economical viewpoint, the bill is intended to create more profit for companies that rely on their creativity and this bill will widely benefit the economy giving us a huge boost in our recessionary period. However the wealth generated by ending piracy assuming the regulations can efficiently blockade piracy cannot cover the loss of wealth generated from used-based content sites. This will lead to the downfall of any platforms for freedom of expression online.
Disregard the negativity of this bill on society, it violates our freedom of speech granted by the first amendment of the constitution.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” (Bill of Rights, US Constitution)
The right of the people to freedom of speech and the right to assemble will jeopardize for the means of industrial benefits.
Congress will be in session to discuss these bills on 24 February and please join together to oppose such regards
